VEHARI, June 21: Two days’ heavy rain rendered more than 400 electricity meters and about a dozen transformers out of order in the district and its adjoining areas. According to information collected on Thursday, most of the meters were eight to 10 years old and installed on poles in Garah Morr, Tibba Sultanpur, Luddan, old bus stand areas and 9-11/WB Sharqi Colony, Machiwal, Thingi area, Temor Shaheed, Muslim Town, Masani Bagh, etc.

Multan Electricity Company (Mepco) source said about a dozen transformers went out of order and in some areas, power supply has not yet been restored.

When contacted, Mepco XEN Ataullah Bhutta said the staff was busy in repairing transformers.

Electricity in union council 1 could not be restored even after 24 hours as two transformers burnt.

Meanwhile, sources said new meters were not available in the circle at present. They admitted that dozens of applications were received on Thursday for replacement of meters. The consumers were demanding replacement of meters free of cost and on priority basis.

Some affected consumers said the meters were installed on electricity poles outside their houses. They burnt due to weather and none of their fault.

They claimed that metres were provided to those who were influential or bribed the officials.
