MARDAN, June 17: Police have arrested a man here on charges of sending threats via SMS to video centres and internet-cafe owners in the area.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Deputy Superintendent of Police Quresh Khan said the accused Jehanzeb belonged to the Kas Koorona area.

A cyber cafe owner Izhar Ali had informed police about the threats received on his mobile phone warning him against spreading obscenity. He claimed that he was told to close down his business within a week or else face the dire consequence of having his café blown up.

The SMS threats were sent from the mobile numbers: 0334-8697343 and 0300-5731937, the police official said. A police team was constituted to investigate the case which traced out Jehannzeb from Kas Kuroona locality.

Police claimed that the arrest of Jehanzeb was a breakthrough since it would enable them to gather information about a dangerous group active since last year in Mardan district that had been issuing threats via letters to CD shop owners, girls schools and vocational centres in the area.
