MANSEHRA, June 14: Displaced families living in Jabba and Mara tent villages on Thursday threatened to resist their eviction if the government failed to pay the promised compensation of Rs75,000 or provide a piece of land to each family.

The district governments of Mansehra and Shangla have set June 30 as deadline for peasants and other categories and July 31 for vulnerable and landless displaced families to evacuate the tent villages and offered a relief package -– ration for two months, 14 CGI sheets and free transportation to each family.

Abdul Rehman, chairman of the Custodian Committee for the Rights of Jabba Displaced Families, informed Dawn that over 400 displaced families were still living in the Jabba tent village and said that the district administration had asked them to vacate the tent village by June 30, otherwise they would be thrown out by force.

Over 1,000 displaced families from Allahi, Kohistan and Shangla are living in the Mara tent village.

Mr Rehman said that a meeting of displaced families held at the camp had decided not to evacuate the tent villages until the compensation or alternative land as announced by President Gen Pervez Musharraf was given to them.

“We have no alternative land nor can we rebuild our houses. We want to make it clear to the government that we will not leave the camps till the acceptance of our demands.”
