KARACHI, June 10: A major traffic jam was witnessed around Hasan Square and its adjacent arteries today when the Hasan Square flyover, leading towards Stadium Road from Sir Shah Suleman Road, was closed to vehicular traffic for undertaking some repair work.

The situation was further aggravated as the road running along the flyover, in front of the Expo Centre, is already closed for vehicular traffic proceeding towards the Stadium Road. Thus all traffic coming from Liaquatabad, Gharibabad, Nazimabad and Sir Shah Suleman Road proceeding towards Stadium Road, Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashidi Road or Karsaz Road, had no choice but to take the long route of Rashid Minhas Road via the Nipa traffic intersection or that of the National Stadium’s rear side, after taking a U-turn from Al-Mustafa Hospital.

Moreover, the exhibition currently underway at the Expo Centre attracted a large crowd on Sunday, adding to the chaotic condition around Hasan Square and its adjacent roads.

Since motorists nowadays avoid taking the route of University Road for proceeding towards New Town and Jail traffic intersection owing to the road’s highly dilapidated condition, the other portion of the University Road, which leads to NIPA, had to bear the entire brunt of the traffic load coming from Liaquatabad and Nazimabad. As a result there was bumper-to-bumper traffic from Hasan Square to the Nipa roundabout.
