KARACHI, June 5: The Saddar Town administration continued to remove debris from last week’s fire at Iqbal Centre, located on M.A. Jinnah Road, on Tuesday.
The staff of the Health Department removed burnt goods from shops, godowns and passages and carried out a chemical spray. On the directive of the Town Nazim, Mohammed Dilawar, the staff of the M&E Department arranged for temporary electricity connections for the flats and shops, while the restoration of the sewerage system was also continuing on an emergency basis.
Meanwhile, in a meeting with the centre’s shopkeepers’ association and flat owners’ cooperative maintenance society, the town nazim apprised them about the steps being taken for the solution of their problems.
He told the residents and shopkeepers to cooperate with the town administration and not to store chemicals, petroleum and other explosive materials in their shops and godowns in the future. They were asked to immediately close down all illegal godowns set up in flats.
On the occasion a committee was formed, which would take steps to rehabilitate those affected by the fire in coordination with the town administration.
ROAD CONSTRUCTION: A 60-foot-wide under-construction road in Shah Faisal Colony No 3, is in the final stages of completion and will be opened for traffic this week.
This was said by Nazim, Shah Faisal Town, Mohammed Imran, during his visit to various parts of the town to review ongoing development schemes on Tuesday. The road is being built at a cost of Rs12.5 million.
He said sewerage lines have been laid on both sides of the road, which will have lane markings, reflectors and other features of a model road. He said a monument is also being constructed in the middle of the road.
The nazim said that construction work on other roads in the town is continuing and illegal encroachments are being removed for the widening of the roads.
RAIN EMERGENCY: Nazim, Orangi Town, Abdul Haq, has said that a comprehensive strategy has been devised to deal with the expected rains.
He said this during a visit to the public complaint centres set up in 13 union councils of the town.
Meanwhile, a rain emergency centre has been activated in Landhi Town on the directives of Town Nazim, Syed Asif Hasnain.
Declaring a rain emergency, the leaves of all staff and officials have also been cancelled. They are to remain on duty in three shifts, while the centre would be working round-the-cock during the expected rains. The telephone number of the centre is 021-5035729.
HAWKERS’ ZONE: A hawkers’ zone is being established in Baldia Town on the pattern of Malaysia on a self-finance basis, said Baldia Town Nazim, Kamran Akhtar, here on Tuesday.
He was reviewing the development works underway on the zone in UC-5, Market-24.
According to the town nazim, the hawkers’ zone would generate Rs.5 million revenue annually for the town, besides helping end encroachments from the area. Tiled pavements would be constructed for pedestrians in the zone to facilitate them, he added.
DRINKING WATER: Sindh Chief Secretary, Shakil Durrani, has directed the authorities concerned to ensure the effective implementation of the programme for the supply of clean drinking water in all the union councils of Sindh as envisioned by President Musharraf.
Meanwhile, Shakil Durrani directed that all possible measures be taken for promoting sports in Lyari like football, boxing and donkey cart races with increased interest at the government level for the removal of obstacles in the way.
In this regard he issued a directive for the improvement in the stadium management system.
PLANTATION CAMPAIGN: Nazim, Liaquatabad Town, Osama Qadri, on Tuesday launched a town-wide tree plantation campaign in schools with the plantation of a sapling at Baba-i-Urdu, Maulvi Abdul Haq Elementary School, UC-5, Liaquatabad.
During the campaign, the children of 43 schools will take part in planting trees.—APP/PPI
