FIA officials hurt in gunplay

GUJRANWALA, June 4: An inspector and a constable of a local FIA raiding team were injured in an encounter with a notorious human smuggler in Faisalabad who was later arrested on Monday.

Gujranwala FIA additional director Hussain Asgher said on a tip that accused Sardar Iftikhar, who had been a fugitive for the last five years, was present in Faisalabad, an agency team led by inspector Mian Sabir raided there and asked the accused to surrender.

But he opened fire on the raiding team, injuring the inspector and constable Iqbal. Law enforcers also returned the fire and after some time the accused laid down his arms.

Mr Asgher said the arrested accused was involved in sending illegally some 400 people to Spain with the help of his accomplice Mian Amjad while 44 of them were arrested by the border security in Spain. He said that two of them had died during interrogation.

He said that main accused Mian Amjad, who was still hiding in Spain, would soon be arrested with the help of Interpol.

FIA Director-General Tariq Pervaiz announced cash prizes and commendation certificates for the raiding party.

OCCUPIES: The land mafia succeeded to occupy on Sunday night a dispensary building being run by the City District Government in Said Nagri Bazaar here on Monday.

Reports said that municipal corporation had started the dispensary some 15 years ago where patients were being provided free medical facilities under the supervision of EDO (health).

The dispensary was reportedly occupied by the land mafia with the connivance of police.

Union council members, including naib nazim Shafqat Qureshi and labour councillor Gulzar, asked the district coordination officer to get vacated the building from land grabbers. The DCO has sought the report in this regard.

Quoting the dispensary in charge, district bar member Mirza Afzal Baig said that a DSP was constructing his house in the occupied building.
