NOWSHERA, Oct 6: Women representatives of the Nowshera district council have decided to tender resignations from the elected body as they are being discriminated in identifying development projects and allocating funds in the new local government system.

This was stated by the presiding officer of Nowshera district council and chairperson of the education committee Sultana Rauf Khattak while talking to the vice chairman of the Nowshera press club here on Friday.

She said that the women councillors, who have formed a pressure group, had also decided to boycott the upcoming budget session of the district council.

Ms Sultana also said that Zila Nazim Pervez Khan Khattak had told the women representatives in clear terms that there was no quota or provision for funds allocation to the women councillors in the rules of business of the new government system. “The women should focus on their domestic roles as they had no authority to identify development schemes,” she said.

She asked the federal and provincial governments to make necessary changes in the rules of business of the district government plan, so that the women could participate in solving the problems of their areas. “If changes were not made in the plan, the women councillors would chalk out the future course of action after the budget session of the district council,” she added.
