KARACHI, May 30: People suffered hours-long power outages in many parts of the city on Wednesday as the Karachi Electricity Supply Corporation resorted to load-shedding to meet 422MW shortfall due to malfunctioning of Bin Qasim Thermal Power Station.

“In such a situation we fear that spells of load-shedding would continuously occur during the whole night,” said the KESC sources despite the fact that power demand decreases at night with the closure of offices and business centres.

Unit No 2 of the Bin Qasim station has not been functioning properly since Wednesday morning. It was only producing 85MW instead of the anticipated 190MW, sources said.

The officials at Bin Qasim Thermal Station said that maintenance work had already been started and it was expected that the power generation unit would be fully restored by Thursday.
