PESHAWAR, May 29: The Peshawar police have planned to raise a modern police force, much on the pattern of the one working in Islamabad, to manage the growing traffic problems in the city, official said.

Capital City Police Officer Abdul Majeed Marwat said the proposal had been finalised which envisages a 100 per cent increase in the number of traffic police personnel.

He expressed the hope that the problem of traffic congestion would be resolved to a considerable extent once the new system was approved by the Chief Minister Akram Durrani and put in place.“We have the services of only 313 police personnel to cope with the traffic problems, which is grossly insufficient.

There is an urgent need to increase the number of traffic police,” he said.

“The traffic police would be imparted training on modern lines. For this purpose, the services of the Motorway and Highway Police and Islamabad Model Police would be obtained,” he said, adding that the condition of roads along with the insufficient number of traffic police personnel and increasing number of vehicles were some of the biggest problems hampering the smooth flow of traffic.
