BADIN, March 1: Two minor sisters, Khalida one year old and Aisha aged two, daughter of Ghulam Qadir Ansari of Shadi Large (taluka Tando Bago), died of measles.
They were the 18th victim of the disease during the last three days.
A minor baby, Shazia aged two and half years, belonging to irrigation colony was affected by epidemic and died the other day.
Reports said that scores of children had been infected with viral infection and were rushed to nearby dispensaries in the district.
A senior doctor in Badin Civil Hospital confirmed that many villages in the far-flung areas in the district were in the grip of measles virus. He said it was a fault of health authorities because they diverted their entire attention towards anti-polio campaign and were not paying any heed to the measles virus.
Meanwhile, the health chief of the district said that the babies whose parents had missed the anti-measles vaccination campaign were infected with the virus of the disease.
He said that steps were being taken to provide immediate treatment after the detection of such cases.
STRIKE: The residents of taluka headquarter town Matli have been experiencing unhygienic conditions following overflow of drains, filth and garbage due to reported strike of sanitary staff for last five days.
The stagnant water, heaps of garbage and stinking mud spread all over the town are threatening the health of the citizens.
The worst affected areas are Patoli Mohalla, Ahsan Shah colony, Jameel colony, Gharibabad and Kashmiri Mohalla.
The municipal Matli employees union leaders, Chand Lal, Ratoo Lal and others warned that sanitary workers would continue their strike till payment of their salaries.
Meanwhile, the taluka Nazim, Asghar Halepoto, assured the workers for early payment of the salaries and added that 31 out of 105 sanitary workers had been paid.
He asked the workers to end the strike.
