PESHAWAR, May 25: The Centre for Civic Education, an Islamabad-based NGO, will hold a two-day meeting here on June 1-2 to brief office-bearers and legislators of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl) on electoral reforms.

The CCE — a partner of the National Democratic Institute, an American-funded NGO — is engaged in briefing political activists on democratic issues. For this purpose, it has organised workshops and seminars on electoral reforms and other parliamentary affairs in various cities.

JUI-F’s provincial information secretary Jalil Jan confirmed that the party had convened a two-day joint meeting, inviting the party’s executive council, consultative committee, district presidents and general secretaries and legislators, to Peshawar to discuss the upcoming elections and the overall political scenario. Mr Jan said CCE Director Zafarullah Khan would speak on elections and electoral reforms.

He said that being a component of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, the JUI-F would continue to struggle for restoration of real democracy in the country.

Mr Jan said the MMA had not organised protest rallies in the province because the alliance’s leaders had not asked them to do so. He said the MMA had observed a protest day in Karachi on Friday to denounce the May 12 “political vandalism and mayhem”.

Pledging the MMA’s support for opposition parties struggle for the reinstatement of the Supreme Court Chief Justice, he said the MMA would welcome the chief justice on his visit to Abbottabad.
