PESHAWAR, May 23: The NWFP government is reviewing a proposal for revamping the traffic police on the pattern of that of Lahore and Islamabad and the Motorway police to improve efficiency of the force.

Romail Akram, Superintendent Police, Traffic, said this while addressing a meeting at the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) here on Wednesday.

He said that a summary relating to the proposed perks and privileges for the local traffic police have been prepared on which a decision is expected shortly.

SCCI acting President Haji Mohammad Israr, executive members and a large number of office bearers of various traders’ bodies attended the meeting and appraised the SP traffic about their complaints.

Mr Akram told the meeting that illegal bus stands were being removed from the city and buses plying between Peshawar and Bara (Khyber Agency) would be restricted only to the Ring Road to overcome the traffic load in the city.

He said that they were finalising a new traffic plan that would be implemented once the newly-built flyover near the Balahisar Fort becomes operational.

He accused the district government and authorities in the cantonment boards of encroachment. He said that they were in contact with the authorities concerned to remove such encroachments and ensure smooth flow of traffic.

He said that currently more than 28,000 minibuses and rickshaws had been plying on city roads without obtaining any legal permits, and added that the traffic police was taking action against all illegal vehicles.

He said that the revenue generated through fines was increasing as last year total receipts under this head was Rs 21.2 million, whereas in the month of April alone it stood at Rs 7.2 million.

Responding to a point, Mr Akram said that a new schedule for the movement of heavy vehicles carrying export and import goods from the Peshawar dry port would be announced shortly to avoid inconveniences of any kind.

The NWFP government is considering awarding certain incentives to the local traffic police as is being done at Islamabad and Lahore.
