ISLAMABAD, May 18: Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan has sought Italian government’s help for immediate commencement of negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU).

Pakistan expected understanding and cooperation from Italy at a stage when the government is engaged in major social reforms, strengthening of a democratic order, elimination of terrorism and helping in the restoration of peace and stability in the region.

He was talking to minister for international trade and European policies Emma Bonino in Italy, according to a press release issued here by commerce ministry on Friday.

The Italian minister expressed understanding on Pakistan’s viewpoint, and assured support of her government.

She said Italy is cognizant of Pakistan’s economic needs and values its relations with Pakistan, both bilaterally and as well as through the European Union.

She said that Italy had always supported Pakistan’s political, economic, commercial and trade interests.

Welcoming the Pakistani commerce minister, the Italian foreign minister expressed his enthusiasm to his official visit to Pakistan next week.

The forthcoming visit will further increase bilateral trade ties between the two countries.

Mr Khan held separate meetings with Italian deputy prime minister and foreign minister and minister for international trade and European policies, and representatives of major exporters of textile machinery to Pakistan.

A wide range of bilateral trade and economic matters were discussed with complete understanding of each other’s position on the bilateral and multilateral trade matters.
