KARACHI, May 9: Leaders of opposition groups in the City Council meet convener of the house, Nasreen Jalil, on Thursday to discuss the situation arising out of the April 26 incident in which several opposition members were manhandled. They incident led to a protest campaign by all the opposition groups who insist on suitable action against the errant treasury members and boycott of the budget session.

Leader of the Opposition Saeed Ghani, who also leads the PPP-backed Awam Dost Group, confirmed that the convener contacted him twice for a dialogue on the issue. He said she appeared to be serious in resolving the issue through a dialogue.

“We have agreed to meet her on Thursday at 2pm at the council’s secretariat,” he said, adding that he had also talked to the leaders of other opposition groups – Al-Khidmat, Khidmatgar and Al-Khadim – who also agreed to take part in the talks.

Mr Ghani said the meeting would be followed by a press conference by the opposition leaders to brief newsmen about the talks.

Leader of the Al-Khidmat Group also confirmed his consent to participate in the talks.
