KARACHI, May 7: Different organisations have planned programmes to observe the World Thalassaemia Day on Tuesday in the city like elsewhere across the globe.

Thalassaemia is the most prevalent inherited blood disorder among children. There are about 10 million people affected by Thalassaemia in Pakistan.

Relevant quarters claim that every year a number of babies born with Thalassaemia-major remain at the risk of not living to be teenagers due to non-availability of screened and matched blood, like those in the lower income countries. Thalassaemia (major) problem is managed by a blood transfusion every 15 to 20 days.

To raise awareness and to help children suffering from Thalassaemia, Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Care Centre will hold a seminar at PECHS Community Hall, Shahrah-i-Quaideen, on Tuesday at 5pm. Sindh governor is likely to be the chief guest on the occasion.

The microbiology society of Jinnah University for Women will organise a seminar in collaboration with Bismillah Taqi Blood Disease Diagnostic Centre at the university at 9.30am on Tuesday.
