Town naib nazim resigns

Published May 7, 2007

FAISALABAD, May 6: Mian Sajjad Ahmed, Madina Town naib nazim, resigned from his office on Sunday over his differences with several house members.

Dawn learnt a majority of the house members were concerned about the “unbecoming” attitude of Mr Ahmed, who was elected naib nazim from Nishatabad Union Council. They asked the naib nazim to mend his ways but saw no relief, sources told Dawn.

Ten house members, including Rana Faryad, Malik Akbar and Ghafoor, submitted a no-confidence motion against Mr Sajjad.

The house meeting was scheduled for May 9 and copies of the agenda had been delivered to the members. Mr Ahmed met with naib nazims and tried to remove differences but in vain.

Smelling his future at the stake, sources said, Mr Ahmed chose to resign instead of facing the no-confidence motion. He served as town naib-nazim for one-and-a-half-year. Mr Ahmed was deputy to Ali Akhtar, younger brother of Provincial Minister Chaudhry Zaheeruddin. Sources of the town requesting anonymity confirmed that Sajjad forwarded his resign to town nazim. Town nazim Ali Akhtar confirmed the resign of Mr Ahmed. He said the May 9 meeting had been cancelled.
