POA serves notice on NWFP

LAHORE, Feb. 27: The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) has served show cause notices to the president and secretary of the NWFP Olympic Association (NWFPOA) for taking the decision of adopting the new sports policy announced by the federal sports ministry last year.

Sources told Dawn that the POA expressed annoyance over the act taken by the NWFPOA in last general council meeting held this month in Peshawar. The NWFPOA, president Saeed Khan, in the meeting, instructed the members of the general council to immediately take steps under the guidance of the new sports policy.

The POA has expressed its concern over the new sports policy which restricts a person from holding the offices of president and secretary of all the national sports federation as well as the POA for more than two terms.

The POA in a letter addressed to its NWFP unit instructed the president and the secretary Syed Aaqil Shah to explain their position on the step taken by them which is the  violation of the POA code of conduct.

The  Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has already adopted the sports policy and had completed elections at the district and provincial  level.

The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) also announced to adopt the policy and the process to hold elections at district level is in progress. Similarly, it was learnt that the Pakistan  Athletics Federation has also decided to hold elections at district level in accordance with the sports policy.
