SANGHAR, April 30: The Tando Adam-II branch on Monday developed an 80 foot wide breach at RD-38 inundating three villages and standing crops of cotton, sugarcane and banana on hundreds of acres.
Mumtaz Magsi, Shahmir Magsi and Jumo Magsi villages were flooded in water from the breach.
The breach occurred at 6:00 in the morning and the personnel of irrigation department reached the spot around 10:00 am well after the villagers had managed to plug it by using their own meagre resources.
The SDO of irrigation Sohail Rind claimed that they had spotted footprints of two people at the breach site hence possibility of sabotage could not be ruled out.
It was the second breach in a month in the canal after the irrigation department had spent Rs20 million to remodel and strengthen its embankments.
There were reports that the contractor had used the silt taken out from the canal’s bed after desilting to reinforce embankments instead of using clay earth.
NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: The Rohri Canal developed an 18 foot wide breach at RD 342 near Qabil Mangrio village in Kandiaro on Monday flooding about 20 acres of uncultivated land.
The personnel of irrigation department with the help of villagers plugged the breach.
Villagers Ali Nawaz Mangrio, Kabir Jamaluddin and Muharram told journalists that if they had not plugged the breach in time it could have flooded the National Highway, which was just a kilometre away from the canal.
