KARACHI, April 26: A lot of enthusiasm filled the students and teachers of Jinnah University for Women on Thursday as an awareness walk was held on the premises of the university, which was part of the anti-dowry campaign run by the students of third year honours of the Mass Communication Department.

The walk was headed by Prof Shahida Kazi, head of the Mass Communication Department, along with Humera Aleem and Saima Fareed. Students chanted slogans and held banners and posters condemning dowry and its evil in society.

This campaign, titled 'Pehl —The First Step', is an awareness programme, in which a seminar was also conducted on the same day. Speakers included Prof Seema Jaleel, Farhana Owais, Surayya Qamar, and Prof Shahida Kazi.

They explained the emergence of dowry in our society, the Islamic point of view and the awareness among women about this issue.

A much applauded drama was also performed by the students of third year, portraying an enlightened woman who fights against the custom of dowry. Poetry was presented by Maria Zia, a student of third year (honours).
