LAHORE, April 19: The supreme council of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) is scheduled to meet in Islamabad on Friday (today) to discuss a heavy agenda which includes making another effort for the establishment of a greater opposition alliance.

According to an MMA spokesperson, the policy-making body of the six-party religious alliance will also make a renewed request to the PML-N to resume efforts to hold a multi-party conference (MPC).

The spokesperson told Dawn that expanding the opposition alliance and organising a MPC were required at this stage of the country’s political situation when reports were suggesting that PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto was entering into a ‘deal’ with the Musharraf regime.

“The MMA feels Ms Bhutto is trying to sabotage the democratic struggle aimed at the restoration of a genuine democratic order, putting an end to the military rule and the revival of the Constitution and other state institutions,” the spokesperson said.

The PPP’s bid, he said, was also going to affect the holding of a fair and transparent election which all the opposition parties were demanding.

He said the PPP leader was willing to accept elections under the regime which all other opposition parties thought would be a meaningless exercise when the government was headed by Gen Pervez Musharraf.

Similarly, accepting Gen Musharraf to be re-elected by the present assemblies with or without uniform would be unconstitutional, the MMA spokesperson said.

He said if the PML-N did not show willingness for certain cogent reasons to hold MPC, the MMA was prepared to host the same as early as possible.

The MMA’s apex body meeting is also scheduled to approve its election manifesto. —Correspondent
