UNITED NATIONS, April 19: Sudan on Thursday lashed out at the United Nations and the Security Council for leaking an unverified report to news media which alleged that the Sudanese government had violated the UN sanctions.

Sudan's UN Ambassador Abdelmahmood Abdelhaleem urged the Security Council president to order an inquiry into the incident.

The briefing prepared by experts monitoring UN sanctions against Sudanalso accused rebel groups of bringing arms, ammunition and military vehicles into Darfur in violation of the embargo.

Mr Abdelhaleem called the panel's allegations ''fabrications'' and ''a cowardly attempt'' to overshadow the government's approval on Monday of the first significant U.N. peacekeeping force for Darfur, according to the official Kuwait News Agency. He added that Sudan requested an urgent investigation of the allegations.

“There is no doubt that enemies of peace and stability of the Sudan have done so in order to overshadow the recent positive developments following acceptance by Sudan of heavy support package .”
