KARACHI, April 17: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday advised the city district government to expedite the proceedings of the committee appointed by it to fix an agreed milk price without worrying for any interim price.

The retail price of Rs28 per litre was challenged by the milk sellers association contending that the production cost was much higher and it was not economically feasible to sell milk at the CDGK-fixed price. The court appointed a committee consisting of all stakeholders, including dairy farmers and wholesalers, to fix an agreed price. In the course of contempt proceedings on the committee’s alleged failure to fix a price, the court fixed an interim retail price at Rs32 and wholesale price at Rs30 per litre.

The CDGK moved a review petition saying that the court-appointed committee had provisionally agreed on the retail price of Rs30 and wholesale price of Rs28 per litre. A higher interim price should not have been fixed by the court, particularly without notice to the CDGK and in the course of contempt proceedings.

Disposing of the review plea, a division bench comprising Justices Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Ali Sain Dino Metlo asked the petitioner government to direct its efforts to work out an agreed price.
