ISLAMABAD, March 24: The government is committed to providing free diagnostic and treatment facilities to those suffering from tuberculosis.

Addressing a seminar on tuberculosis here on Saturday, Health Secretary Syed Anwar Mahmood said the government had improved TB detection system due to which TB cases were being properly treated.

He said the government was successfully implementing its DOTS programme under which free diagnostic and treatment services were being provided in every district.

“People would have to come forward and avail these facilities particularly those with early symptoms of the disease and those afflicted by the scourge.”

Mr Mahmood said an effective communication strategy was in place to inculcate treatment seeking behaviour among the populace.

He said media’s role was vital in creating awareness among the masses regarding health issues and prevention.

He asked media to play its role to control tuberculosis in the country.

The secretary said the government was doing its best in this regard, however, he added that it was the responsibility of every citizen to play his role along with the government in its fight against various diseases.

He said it was high time that joint efforts were made to get rid of diseases like polio, tuberculosis and malaria.

The secretary said role of civil society in mobilising communities and encouraging partners to invest in TB control was of utmost importance.— APP
