KARACHI: Poor sanitation in Lyari

Published March 13, 2007

KARACHI, March 12: The residents of Lyari have expressed concern over poor sanitary conditions in the entire town as a result of Sunday’s downpour. They said due to the absence of an effective sanitation network, sludge and heaps of garbage were strewn everywhere providing breeding ground to flies and mosquitoes and other insects exposing people to serious health problems.

Garbage collection and disposal is a serious problem in the town as most of the designated dumping spots in the town have been vanished. It is observed that in most cases, such a dumping is a common sight within the ground floors of multi-storey building.

In many of the localities such as Baghdadi and Shah Beg lane areas, garbage could be seen littered around unattended. One could hardly endure the foul smell emanating from the garbage.

A survey of the affected areas including Daryabad, Nawabad, Memon Society, Khadda and parts of Baghdadi and Kalri show that sanitation system seems to have collapsed because there is no emergency plan in the town municipal administration.

Complaining about the indifferent attitude of civic agencies, the residents called for taking effective measures to meet any eventuality before any epidemic might breakout in the town.
