ISLAMABAD/CHAKWAL, March 11: Ten people, including a retired air commodore, were killed in separate road accidents in Islamabad and Chakwal.

In the first incident, eight persons were killed and four injured when a salt-loaded truck fell into a ditch near Bhaal village in the jurisdiction of Kallar Kahar police station some 45km from here on Sunday.

The truck, carrying salt from Khewra, was heading towards Lahore when its brakes failed near Bhaal village due to rain and fell into a 30-foot deep ditch. Eight people were killed on the spot while four were injured.

The names of those who died are Mohammad Asghar, Mohammad Anar, Tariq Mehmood, Ghulam Jailani, Mohammad Tauseef, Manzoor Hussain, Mohammad Bilal and Mohammad Asghar.

The in charge of Buchaal police checkpost, Mohammad Khalid, rushed to the spot with a heavy contingent of police and shifted the injured — Sakhawat Irfan, Asghar and Aslam — to Rural Health Centre Buchaal Kalan.

In another incident, a retired air commodore and a constable of the capital police were killed when a truck skidded off the road and fell on the car in which the former airforce officer was travelling and also hit the policeman standing nearby on Sunday.

The truck (SA-3975) carrying buffaloes was negotiating a turn near Sunday Bazaar in I-9 police area when a car in which Air Commodore (retired) Shahid Hamid Shigri was travelling crashed into it after which the truck overturned and fell on the constable, Ikhlaq Ahmed, standing nearby.

DSP Industrial Area police Jamil Hashmi said the truck driver lost control of the steering after being hit by the car. Apparently, the truck driver was at fault because he should have been careful while approaching the highway.

The body of Air Commodore Shigri was pulled out of the car after efforts of several hours, police said.

The truck driver, Mohammad Rafiq, who sustained minor injuries, has been arrested and a case registered against him.
