MUMBAI, March 9: Fast bowling icon Waqar Younis hopes Pakistan will break the World Cup jinx and beat arch-rivals India at the mega event in the West Indies.

“We have beaten India at various venues but have not won a single match against them in the World Cup. I feel Pakistan will overcome India in this World Cup,” said the former captain on the sidelines of a promotional event here.

Pakistan are in Group D while India in Group B in the preliminary phase of the World Cup. Their first meeting is expected only in the Super Eight stage.

Waqar, a master of reverse swing, added though the World Cup is wide open, still he expected one of the Sub-continent teams – Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka – to clinch it since pitches in the Caribbean and those at their own venues are similar in nature.

“The tournament looks wide open with no favourites. Though Australia have been beaten recently, their consistent record over the last four years means they cannot be taken lightly. But they are at a disadvantage due to the absence of (paceman) Brett Lee and injury to (all-rounder) Andrew Symonds,” Waqar, who claimed 373 Test and 416 one-day wickets during his illustrious career, expressed. —Agencies
