GUJRANWALA, Oct 19: Three policemen, including a sub-inspector, were arrested on Friday on the charge of torturing to death an alleged dacoit a month ago.

Kamoke police also registered a case against them.

SI Ghulam Haider had arrested Muhammad Rafiq of Kamoke in a dacoity case at the behest of his rivals. During interrogation, Rafiq died due to severe torture by constables Akber Ali and Akram.

The heirs of the deceased and residents of Kamoke took out a rally and demanded that a murder case should be registered against the accused policemen.

Taking action, the police high-ups inducted CIA DSP as inquiry officer who found the policemen guilty of charges.

LOOTED: Armed dacoits and robbers looted two houses and as many passers-by and also took away a motorcycle in five strikes in and around the city here on Friday.

Six armed outlaws stormed into Muhammad Latif’s house in Tambooli village, Wahando, held the inmates hostage and then locked them in a room. They collected Rs90,000 in cash, 45 tolas of gold, wristwatches, electronic goods and other valuables and fled.

Five bandits barged into the house of Faqir Hussain in Bilal Town, Cantonment. They took the inmates hostage at gunpoint, scooped Rs60,000 in cash, ornaments and other valuables and escaped.

Two armed robbers intercepted Muhammad Mushtaq of Farid Town and snatched Rs11,000 in cash when he was going to Satellite Town market. They also thrashed him for offering resistance.

Three robbers deprived another passer-by Imran of Rs1,200 in Model Town while he was on his way home.

Two robbers intercepted passer-by Shafiq and took away his motorcycle at pistol point.

SUNFLOWER: The Pakistan Oilseed Development Board has urged farmers to grow more sunflower for meeting edible oil requirements of the country.

Speaking at a meeting held here on Friday, PODB senior director Riaz Akhter said the government had to incur an expenditure of Rs40 billion per annum on the import of edible oil.

He suggested that growers should approach agricultural offices at district and tehsil level to consult experts befire sowing sunflower. He said sunflower should be sown by Nov 1.

Representatives of farmers Chaudhry Muhammad Akmal and Haji Allah Ditta informed the director about the problems faced by growers.

UNIDO: The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Unido) has urged the manufacturers to produce quality export items to earn much-needed foreign exchange for the country.

Speaking at a meeting of the local chamber of commerce and industry, Unido representative Anjum Fiaz said that an industrial cluster was imperative for the development of quality products.

He said Gujranwala, Wazirabad and Sialkot were the main industrial cities for setting up industrial clusters.

GCCI president Rana Nasir Mahmood and others also addressed on the occasion.
