KARACHI, March 7: The prime suspect in the gang-rape of a 13-year-old girl, who has been staging a sit-in for three weeks to demand justice, was arrested here on Wednesday.

Police said they arrested Shaban Shaikh from his ‘hideout’ in Karachi and were making efforts to track down the three other suspects.

Kainat Soomro, her father and other relatives have been staging a sit-in outside the Karachi Press Club, demanding the arrest of the four accused who had kidnapped her from a school in her village on Jan 10.

The girl told reporters outside the press club that she was happy about the arrest. “Shaikh was the leader of the gang which destroyed my life,” she said, adding that she and her family had been receiving threats and were being pressurised to withdraw the case.
