GUJRAT, March 6: British police have reportedly arrested two Pakistanis who allegedly received ransom from a Pakistani to release his brother they allegedly kidnapped in Gujrat.

Dawn learnt Raja Masood Sarwar, known political figure in Sarai Alamgir, and his accomplice were arrested in England on the charge of receiving £204,000 as ransom from Zaman Mughal to release his brother.

Sabir Mughal from Mirpur was kidnapped from Pakistan on Feb 7 and kidnappers asked his family to deliver ransom in England. Zaman, brother of the abducted man, went to England and delivered £240,000 to the accused on Feb 20 and on receiving the money, Sabir was released in Pakistan.

Zaman informed the West Yorkshire police about the matter. The police raided a place in London and arrested Sarwar and seized the amount and other documents. Police also raided Bradford and arrested his accomplice Malik Rehmat Khan.

Reports received here stated that accused kidnappers’ bail had been rejected by a lower court and they had moved a superior court.

Sarwar belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and contested the election for the slot of Sarai Alamgir tehsil nazim in 2001. Rahmat is uncle of former provincial law minister Chaudhry Farooq who was murdered in 2002.

The district seems in the grip of kidnappers as two incidents of kidnap for ransom have occurred here.

Four accused kidnapped Supreme Court official Tariq Bashir and later release him after taking ransom.

Expatriate Pir Ghulam Rasool was kidnapped from Head Jaggu by three unidentified gunmen who later freed him after receiving Rs700,000 from his family.

Police believe Sarwar was also involved in the kidnapping of Rasool.
