SIALKOT, March 5: The performance of Sialkot education and buildings departments came under fire during a five-hour session of the district council held at Anwar Club Auditorium late on Saturday.

Heads of all the nation-building departments were also present in the meeting.

Presenting his resolution, Kapurpur-Pasrur UC nazim Rana Muhammad Aslam said the education department had miserably failed to ensure early provision of all the missing basic facilities in most of the government primary and elementary schools, especially in rural areas.

He told the house that girls primary school, Qadiyaanwali consisted of only one classroom, boys primary school, Rajbah did not have its building while additional classrooms in boys primary school, Kapurpur had not been completed due to non-availability of funds since long.

Mr Aslam said cracks had appeared in rooftops of all classrooms of boys primary school, Dharkaali and girls primary school, Khambey had no boundary wall while its classrooms were in a dilapidated condition.

Another member told the house that the district government had recently allocated Rs52 million for development of all the government primary and elementary schools through school management committees.

In his another resolution, nazim Rana Muhammad Aslam told the house that girls primary school, Dharkaali had been upgraded to elementary level in 1990, but the school was not elevated by the Sialkot education department despite construction of its building. On this occasion, EDO (Education) Muhammad Yousaf Bhatti could not satisfy the members. He, however, told the house that the Sialkot education and buildings departments had no record regarding upgradation of the school.

The house was told that construction of the 2.5km Kapurpur-Wayn Noor Shah Road had been lying pending for the last four years. The road was to be completed in eight months at cost of Rs4.5 million, but the contractor had allegedly disappeared after getting full payment in advance.

The council members have demanded probe into these issues.
