MULTAN, March 5: Chishtian (Bahawalnagar district) police on Monday arrested three panchayat members for giving two minor sisters in `vani’ as punishment for the sins committed by their brother.

Reports said that Mumtaz Ahmed of Chak 204 (Murrad) had called a panchayat some two months ago alleging that Khadim Hussain, the son of widow Feroza Bibi, had relations with his daughter Tasleem Bibi.

The panchayat summoned Feroza Bibi and asked her to give her two daughters, Kulsoom (8) and Shehnaz (9), to the two sons of Mumtaz Ahmed as compensation.

The panchayat also held a nikah ceremony in which Shehnaz Bibi was married to Ghulam Murtaza (14) and Kulsoom Bibi was wedded to Muhammad Umer (12).

In the meanwhile, Feroza Bibi shifted to her relatives in Kasur where she narrated her woes to area nazim Sardar Muhammad Aslam Dogar who reported the matter to Chishtian police.

On the orders of Chishtian DSP Chaudhry Liaquat Ali Cheema, Dahranwala police registered a case against 17 people and arrested three main accused — Fazal, Mushtaq and Zafar Hussain. Police were also conducting raids for the arrest of the remaining accused.
