KARACHI, March 4: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has expressed satisfaction over the law and order situation in Sindh province and stressed need for more concerted efforts towards curbing street crime.

He was presiding over a high level meeting here on Sunday which reviewed overall law and order situation in the province.

The meeting was attended by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Federal Minister for Information Mohammad Ali Durrani, Federal Minister for Communications Shamim Siddiqui and senior officials.

It was informed that no terrorist incident or activity occurred in the province in recent past and people’s confidence in law-enforcement agencies stood restored.

The meeting was also told that about 1,000 snatched cellphone sets were restored to their owners and several arrests were made in the action against those involved in street crimes over the past three months.

Separately, speaking at a ceremony at the Governor’s House to distribute compensation cheques among the heirs of Samjhota Express tragedy victims, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has called for concerted efforts against the menace of terrorism, the prime minister called for a vigorous drive against terrorism. He termed the train incident ‘an act of terrorism’, and said that terrorism was not a solution to any problem.

“Wherever in the world there are incidents of terrorism or extremism, the problems there become complicated instead of getting resolved.

Mr Aziz said that problems were resolved only through negotiations and with the spirit of tolerance and reconciliation while acts of terrorism only resulted in the loss of innocent lives.

He said the government fully denounced terrorism and was taking measures against this menace. He further pointed out that Pakistan wanted to resolve all disputes with India, including the core issue of Kashmir, through negotiations.

He said: “through dialogue and diplomacy, we want improvement in our ties.”

Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad and Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, in their speeches, thanked prime minister for coming to Karachi to share sentiments of the affected families.—PPI/APP
