KARACHI: Awards for women

Published February 26, 2007

KARACHI, Feb 25: There are many awards ceremonies held in the city but the unusual aspect about the one organised on Saturday night Women’s Forum ‘Role Model 2007 – Celebrating Womanhood’ at a local hotel was that it honoured women who had excelled in different fields.

The forum was meant to acknowledge women who excelled in different fields and aimed at setting benchmarks for the young working women. The awards were decided upon by a jury that comprised 19 distinguished people from all walks of life.

There were 10 categories for which the awards were given to Yasmeen Lari (fine arts), Ameena Saiyed (publications), Sheema Kirmani (performing arts), Anis Haroon (social work), Sultana Siddiqui (electronic media), Justice Nasra Iqbal (law), Ruqia Nazeer (private/corporate sector), Dr Rehana Mohammad Ali Shah (science), Sonya Batla (style and fashion) and Zubaida Dosal (education). The trophies chosen for the programme were so heavy that both the presenter and winners had problem carrying them.

The programme, organized by Kentucky Fried Chicken, was conducted by Anwar Maqsood. The CEO Cupola Pakistan Ltd, Rafiq Rangoonwala, also spoke.

At the end of the programme, there was a skit performed by Anwar Maqsood and Moin Akhtar. Though one couldn’t make out the link between the event and the theme of the performance, the duo did win some appreciation.— Our Reporter
