Carrera fails drugs test

PANAMA CITY (Panama), Feb 24: Mariano Carrera's B sample confirmed a positive test for a banned substance, and the Argentine boxer will be stripped of the WBA middleweight title he won in December.

The WBA initially announced Carrera tested positive for Clembuterol in early January, after he defeated Javier Castillejo of Spain for the middleweight title on Dec 2 in Berlin.

Carrera requested the B sample be tested, and it was conducted on Wednesday in Cologne, Germany.

Carrera had 10 working days to appeal to the medical and world championship committee of the WBA, the governing body said in a statement on Friday.

Castillejo was also reinstated as the world champion, the WBA said.—AP
