KARACHI, Feb 18: Three non-government organisations representing Lyari and Trans-Lyari have expressed concern at the perennial water crisis in Lyari despite the authorities repeated assurances to solve it.

In an appeal, the representatives of Baloch Rights Council, NGO Alliance Karachi and Lyari Social Movement reminded that various water projects costing million of rupees had been launched in the past to increase water supply to the locality, but the people could not benefitThey referred to the COD water project meant to increase water supply for the locality from the Hub river source.

They said that the people of Lyari had never been given their share of water from this source todate and the locality continued to face a water shortage.

They also criticised the K-III project, saying the water supplied through this project was harmful for human consumption because of defective pipelines.

They said that the water supply problem in Lyari was much more serious than other parts of Karachi.

They said Lyari needs 30mgd to 40mgd to meet its requirements but hardly gets 8mgd.

The office bearers said there are localities in the area with water connections that have received little or no water in years. When they receive water, it is often contaminated, they concluded.
