Published February 18, 2007

KARACHI, Feb 17: The Jamaat-i-Islami has demanded immediate release of a Moazzin and stern action against those who had allegedly beaten him up at a mosque in New Karachi.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the JI claimed the nazim of a union council in New Karachi backed by an ethnic party struck at Jamia Masjid Abdul Aziz, Sector 5M, along with his ‘henchmen’ and grabbed Nasir, Moazzin of the mosque. The intruders dragged him out of the mosque and beat him up severely, it added.

According to the statement, he was taken to the Bilal Colony police station and a false FIR of immoral practices was lodged against him on the directives of the nazim. The Moazzin was subsequently arrested.—Staff Reporter
