KARACHI, Feb 16: Sindh Home Adviser Wasim Akhtar has said that efforts are being made to enhance the salaries of police personnel and provide them residential and medical facilities.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony of a computerised Complaint Centre of Madadgar-15 in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town on Thursday night, he said the police force had been used for political purposes for the past 60 years. “Efforts are underway to improve this department besides rectifying the mistakes committed in the past”, he added.

He said approval would soon be obtained from the chief minister to purchase of new weapons, mobiles and motorcycles for the department.

Lauding the police role in combating crime, he said 52 officials and constables had sacrificed their lives for the people’s welfare during the past one year. Later, Wasim Akhtar inaugurated the Complain Center of Madadgar-15 and inspected the computer lab. He also distributed appreciation certificates and prizes among officials and cops for extraordinary performance.

Speaking to the media, the home advisor said police parties were conducting raids to arrest the culprits involved in the gang-rape of Naseema Labano. Six suspects Shahzad, Abdul Jabbar, Anwar, Ali Hassan, Shah Beg and Log had already been arrested.

He also directed Regional Police Officer, Sukkur, to ensure the safety of another rape victim’s family as they feared for their lives.
