PESHAWAR, Feb 7: The provincial Local Government Commission on Wednesday took strong exception to the violation of rules and regulations in awarding contracts of cattle fairs and slaughter house in Town One, Peshawar.
A meeting of the commission under the chairmanship of NWFP Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Sardar Mohammad Idrees here disposed of a number of inquiry reports regarding irregularities in the allotment of shops and commercial markets.
The meeting noted that the cattle fair and slaughter house in Town One had been leased out for 36 years but it did not mean to award its contracts to an individual. Therefore, it was decided to float the tender of the contract in newspapers every year as per rules.
The meeting noted with concern that income from this contract could not be increased during the last three years because of restricting it to an individual.
It welcomed the federal government decision of providing Rs7.5 million for 13 development schemes in Charsadda district.
The minister said that provincial and district governments had inadequate resources for development schemes and problems of the mega city were soaring with the passage of time.
The meeting underlined the need for clear demarcation of all four towns of Peshawar and preparation for its maps on scientific grounds.
The meeting was informed that the provincial government would consider a summary of the commission for strengthening the commission and local bodies on priority basis.
The minister also called for preparing a report on the performance of the LG Commission and local bodies during the last four years, with clear mention of the steps taken in respect of accountability, financial discipline, good administration, use of resources and powers, future targets, need and problems.—PPI
