KARACHI, Feb 6: The idea of linking the driving licence system with the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) is not likely to materialise in the near future.

The idea was floated by Nadra officials, who also gave a briefing to participants of a meeting held last October with the Sindh Police inspector general in the chair.

It was also attended by the home secretary, the Traffic and Headquarters DIGs, officers of the driving licence branches and concerned police officers.

The system was meant to make the procedure more transparent, discourage fake documents and obtain information in shortest time.

Referring to the briefing, a traffic police official said under the new digital system, a particular radio frequency ID (RFID) number would be allotted to all driving licences while traffic officers would be provided the related devices to identify and make entries of the RFID and later with its help provide all record of a RFID licence chip to ca entral server for compilation as database.

The project was to be introduced in Sindh in three phases with two months needed to collect data from the driving licence branches in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur and six months to collect data from the other districts in the second phase.

In the third phase, RDIF driving licences would be issued and a ticketing system implemented.

The DIG Traffic police, when contacted, said no formal agreement had been signed and it was just an idea floated by Nadra.

He said the idea was convincing, especially in this age of latest technologies. About its implementation, the DIG said it would probably take at least two years for implementation.
