KARACHI, Feb 6: People from different areas in the city complained of power breakdowns on Tuesday, some of them saying their localities had suffered prolonged outages. The Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC)’s spokesman claimed it was due to cable faults.

A resident of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Block 4-A, said electricity had been suspended in the locality at 5pm and not been restored till late in the night, which resulted into a complete darkness in the locality. Students preparing for various examinations were particularly affected by the power failures, he said.

Complaints about the power suspensions were also received from Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board filter plants, Firdous Colony, Zamzama, Clifton, Defence, Lyari, Machhar Colony and Site.

A KESC spokesman told Dawn that power had been suspended in Gulshan-i-Iqbal due to a cable fault, but the rest of the network was functioning normally.

He said there would be no shutdown on Wednesday, adding that the maintenance work would not affect consumers.

In reply to a question about the demand for electricity, the spokesman said that both the supply and demand ranged from 1,400 to 1,600 megawatts daily.
