QUETTA, Feb 1: A student seeking admission to the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad, has accused the Balochistan governor of having told the vice-chancellor of the university not to publish the list of Balochistan candidates in order to ensure admission of a particular student.

Ghulam Dastigeer Qambarani told a news conference on Thursday that the Balochistan province had 3.5 per cent quota in the QAU which ensured reservation of 2 seats of the province in each department of the university.

He alleged that the Balochistan governor, in order to ensure admission of the son of an additional secretary to the prestigious university of Islamabad had asked the QAU VC to withhold the merit list of Balochistan candidates till the announcement of the result of BA/BSc examination of the Balochistan University.

He further said that the candidate in question had appeared in the BA examination of 2006, whose result was yet to be announced by the Balochistan University.

Mr Qambarani also accused the Balochistan University administration of having faxed the result of this favourite candidate to the Quaid-i-Azam University in order to ensure his admission to the university.

He said that being one of the top universities of the country, every student wished to be given admission to the QAU, which admitted students twice a year – in January on regular basis and in September on self-finance basis.

He said the majority of the students applied for admissions to the university in January as they could not afford the admissions given under the self-finance scheme due to weak financial position.

He said the first merit list of admission of candidates' from Punjab, Sindh and the NWFP was made public on Jan 25 but the merit lists of MS Economics, Anthropology, International Relations and Defence & Strategic sciences had been withheld due to the letter of the Balochistan governor to the Quaid-i-Azam University Vice Chancellor.

He appealed to the Vice Chancellor of the Quaid-i-Azam University to announce the merit list of the candidates of the Balochistan province to ensure that admissions were granted purely on merit.
