HYDERABAD, Jan 26: Atta Chakki Owners Welfare Association (ACOWA) on Friday appealed to the prime minister and chief minister to order an inquiry into the supply of substandard wheat to floor mills and refuted the claim of food officials posted at Bolhari godowns that they were supplying the mills good quality wheat.

In a joint statement the association’s general secretary Haji Mohammad Hafeez and office-bearers Mehdi Hassan and Haji Khalil Ahmed Qureshi said that the food officials had themselves admitted at a press conference held a few days ago that 139,420 wheat bags were lying under open sky when heavy rains lashed the province.

They said that the officials, however, failed to inform the press conference about the number of wheat bags damaged in the rains.

They repeated their claim that the godowns were supplying them the wheat which was injurious to human health and warned if they did not get good quality wheat they would launch a protest drive after the sacred month of Muharram.

POWER DISCONNECTION: The Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco) announced on Friday that the company had disconnected power to a total of 2,759 government and domestic consumers across the province and extracted an amount of Rs204.758 million from the defaulters.

Hesco Manager (Commercial) Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah said that the Sindh government and its subsidiary departments owed the company more than Rs3.76 billion as in November 2006 and did not pay up despite repeated reminders.

Mr Shah said that the company had not disconnected power supply to Imambargahs and utility organisations keeping in view the sanctity of Muharram.

He said that the officials of Hyderabad Development Authority, which owed Hesco Rs276 million, had said in a meeting with company officials that the authority had no funds and sought time to approach the government for funds.
