PESHAWAR, Jan 25: The National Accountability Bureau has sought information from the registrar of the cooperative societies, Islamabad, regarding the Lead Cooperative Society, Peshawar branch, scam, which has deprived dozens of citizens of their earnings.

NAB Coordination Deputy Director M. Afzal Khalid has sent a letter to the registrar in this regard in view of an application sent by Dwa Jan, widow of one of the victims, Nazir Gul, more than two years ago. Mr Gul died of cancer in December 2002 after his savings of Rs150,000 got stuck in the scam.

The society was registered in Islamabad and it was dissolved in 1992. The victims have been waiting for the recovery of their investment over the past 14 years and several of them have expired.

Ms Jan stated that in Punjab the government had been taking interest in recovery of the money stuck up in different cooperative society scams but the victims in the NWFP had not got any relief.
