KARACHI, Jan 25: The Sindh government has set up the ‘Sindh Technical Education & Vocational Training Authority’ (STEVTA) with a view to provide necessary training to youths in order to meet the increasing demand for skilled manpower at home and abroad.

An ordinance for the formal establishment of the Authority is likely to be issued shortly.

According to informed sources, the STEVTA would be an autonomous body which will provide legal and institutional framework for the management of technical education and vocational training in Sindh.

Its bylaws have been drafted on the pattern of similar institutions being run successfully in different countries, particularly Philippines.

The Sindh Technical Education & Vocational Training Authority (STEVTA) will facilitate establishment of linkages between the training courses and requirements of Industrial concerns to ensure that the multiple technical education and skill-development programmes were beneficial to the recipients of the training in their jobs in any industry or market within the country and abroad.

The chief minister and chief secretary would be chairman and deputy chairman of the Authority, respectively.

Its board would comprise secretaries of labour & industries, finance, education and literacy, besides four experienced industrialists (to be nominated by the government for three years), a representative from a recognised engineering and technology university and a representative of NAVTEC. Managing director of the Authority will also act as member/secretary of the board.
