Nomi, Aqeel move into quarter-finals

KARACHI, Jan 19: Nomi Qamar, who represented the country in the Davis Cup relegation round two against China in Sept last, made it into last eight without breaking any sweat in the Pakistan Open tennis championship at CDGK Sports Complex on Friday.

Fourth seed Nomi, who got a walkover against Adnan Khan the other day, was awarded yet another walkover when his opponent Shabbir Gul from Hyderabad failed to turn up.

He is now drawn to meet M. Shafiq (Sahiwal) who accounted for Adeel 6-1, 6-0.

Top seed Aqeel Khan was also through to quarter-finals following a walkover against Faizanul Haq. He is pitted against his younger brother Yasir who struggled to beat Nasir Mushtaq 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the only interesting match.

Jalil Khan, Asim Shafik (Islamabad) and Tanvir Aashiq (Lahore) also moved ahead by registering straight wins. The winner of Shahzad Khan (Faisalabad) — Saad Baloch (Hyderabad) will join the rest to complete the line up.

Islamabad’s Sara Mansoor who represented the country in the juniors Federation Cup at Bangkok last year, handed 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Aysha Mir to cruise in the ladies singles last four.

He faces former Pakistan No 1 long time ago Nayla Khan who gave a glimpse of her past by getting the better of Eman Malik 6-3, 6-4.

Nida Wasim who earned a walkover against Uzma Ansari will be up against former National Hard Court champion, Seher Khawaja who beat Uzma Zakaria 6-0, 6-0. Prodigy Khawaja Hamza opened his account with a straight 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ali Mooraj in boys U-11 singles.

Khawaja Hamzabt Ali Mooraj 6-0, 6-0, Talha Zuberi bt ZaidMujahid 7-6, 6-4.

Boys U-13 singles (first round):

Sheryar Ahmed bt Yousuf Khan 6-2, 6-2, Shakil Ahmed bt Imran Mooraj 7-6, 7-6.
