BAHAWALPUR, Jan 13: A wanted man described by police as a member of the inter-district gang of dacoits was `killed in an encounter’ at Mauza Jhoke Syedan near Lal Sohanra, 30km from here, on Saturday.

On a tip off that accused Muhammed Asif was hiding at the ‘dera’ of Muhammed Nawaz Bhabha, a team conducted a raid and killed him in a crossfire, ASP City Zulfiqar Ali Mahar told a news conference.

He said Asif was wanted by police in over a dozen cases of dacoity, robbery and murder.

According to the ASP, two of Asif’s accomplices — Mushtaq alias Musa Phul and Javed alias Jaida - managed to escape. Nawaz Bhabha, the owner of the dera, was arrested.
