LAHORE, Jan 12: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal president Qazi Husain Ahmad is understood to have again insisted on quitting the leadership of the alliance because he seems disappointed with the standpoint of four of six parties over the question of resigning from assemblies.
The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazlur Rahman), the JUI (seniors) of Maulana Abdur Rahim Naqvi, the Markazi Jamiat Ahal-i-Hadith of Senator Sajid Mir and the Tehrik-i-Islami headed by Allama Sajid Naqvi are learnt to have refused to quit assemblies as part of the MMA’s anti-government campaign. These parties have time and again told the Qazi that such a ‘drastic step’ is not possible because they have other considerations and did not see eye to eye with the Jamaat-i-Islami campaign.
The only supporter of the Jamaat’s view in the MMA is the Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan, which hardly has any presence in the national and provincial assemblies.
Now that the question of quitting the assemblies is certainly not to be implemented, Qazi Husain Ahmad is learnt to have reviewed his stance by asking the MMA parties to boycott the proceedings f the National Assembly, the Senate and provincial assemblies.
According to MMA sources, this proposal may find a positive response from the component parties who are learnt to have responded to the latest stance of Qazi Husain Ahmad as they understand that such an action is possible as they are prepared to go to any extent in the anti-government campaign short of resigning from assemblies.
However, all the thorny issues will be discussed at the next meeting of the MMA supreme council, which is likely to be held in Islamabad towards the end of this month or the first week of February. Qazi Husain Ahmad will present his point of view in what is called a “very sensitive” meeting of the supreme council.
In this meeting Qazi Husain is expected to propose the name of Senator Sajid Mir as the next MMA president.
According to sources, Prof Mir did not agree to the proposal of the Jamaat-i-Islami amir and asked him to continue in office. The question of raising a controversial issue was discussed between Qazi Husain Ahmad and Prof Sajid Mir when they met here on Thursday and the two leaders decided to take the supreme council in confidence on matters, which were to create impact on the unity of the six-party alliance.
Also learnt is that Qazi Husain Ahmad himself plans to quit the National Assembly along with his daughter Sameea Raheel and the Jamaat-i-Islam MNAs who would subscribe to his view. Such an action manifests how disappointed the MMA president is with other component organisations.
The Jamaat-i-Islami is also understood to have started thinking in terms of a post-MMA situation. It has recently begun deliberations within the party of an alternative to the MMA. For this, the Jamaat is discussing the country’s political situation with the like-minded organisations. The political cooperation that the Jamaat’s Punjab party has extended to the PML-N and the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf in the province the other day may provide the Jamaat with the chance of furthering the objective of another alliance.
