HYDERABAD, Jan 12: DPO Ali Ahmed Junejo held a meeting with the leaders of the Shia Ulema Council and representatives of mourners’ organisations in his office on Friday to review security arrangements for Muharram.

The participants assured the DPO that peaceful holding of mourning processions and Majalis during Muharram would be ensured.

They spoke about different problems likely to be faced during mourning processions and referred to under-construction roads which were not passable as yet.

They said that if the roads were levelled, it would facilitate mourners to a great extent, adding that uninterrupted water and power supply should be ensured during Ashura.

They expressed the hope that there would be complete harmony between followers of Shia and Sunni sects and both would extend cooperation to the police in maintaining peace.

The DPO told the participants that the city had always remained peaceful during Muharram and the police had always ensured protection to lives and property of the people. He sought cooperation of the Ulema and people in case of any trouble.

He said that close circuit TVs were being installed on the routes of mourning processions and around Imambargahs. He said that police would ensure that loudspeakers in mosques were used only for Friday sermon and Azan.

He said that ban on objectionable programmes and playing of cassettes or those recordings that hurt feelings of others would be ensured.

He said that leaves of policemen had been cancelled and there would high alert in the city during Ashura.

The meeting was attended by Syed Moazzam Kazim, Nizamul Hyderi, Mohammad Ahmed Jafri and others, besides City SP Muneer Ahmed Sheikh and other police officials.
