Pickets in Lahore irk people

Published January 10, 2007

LAHORE, Jan 9: Police have started setting up pickets across the city from 5pm to 10pm under a directive from the new IGP. The former IGP had ordered the police not to picket city roads and crossing following complaints of highhandedness and harassment.

On Tuesday, people, especially motorcyclists, reportedly faced a great deal of problems at the pickets that also hindered smooth traffic flow on many of the city roads.

A young man, Kamran Iqbal, while reacting to the pickets said the police had never achieved the desired results. Instead, he said, people suffered at the hands of cops at the pickets.

ARRESTED: Misri Shah police on Tuesday arrested a culprit, seized a car, recovered drugs and official caps. Policemen signalled a car (LRX-5976) to stop but it crashed through the picket.

The policemen chased the car and managed to stop it near Aik Moria bridge and arrested one of its occupants. He was identified as Ghalib Khan, a resident of Swabi. His accomplice managed his escape.
