LAHORE, Jan 8: The statements of the injured deputy inspector general (DIG) of police contradict the evidence collected from the crime scene, sources told Dawn on Monday. Gulberg police registered a case against two ‘unidentified robbers’ who had shot at and injured DIG Tassaduq Hussain on Sunday night.

Mr Hussain, under treatment at Mayo Hospital, told police that he was on way to a departmental store near Liberty Park when two robbers intercepted him and snatched his wallet and a cell phone.

“They also shot at and injured me when I put up resistance,” sources quoted the DIG as telling police.

Quoting the DIG, police said he was intercepted by robbers near Liberty Park who held him at gunpoint by opening the driving seat door. But the investigators doubted the DIG’s statement after collecting evidence from the spot (and after the examination of the car).

“Someone sitting at the left side may have shot the bullets,” sources quoted investigators as having said. They said a bullet injury in DIG’s left hip and recovery of empty shells from the car also strengthened investigators’ belief that Mr Hussain had been fired at from the left side.

Investigators were also at loss to understand why the DIG went to Zafar Ali Road instead of driving to the nearby UCH hospital.

“I am unable to conclude the whole episode. It is understandable that the DIG was injured in a robbery bid or enmity but it is confusing how he received bullet in his back during resistance,” commented a senior police officer seeking anonymity.

Meanwhile, police did not allow reporters an access to the injured DIG. Sources said even the Gulberg SPO could not meet Mr Hussain for investigation.

Two teams constituted for the arrest of the culprits remained clueless till Monday night. The police investigators prepared sketches of the accused besides examining videos of close circuit cameras installed in and around Liberty Market to trace the culprits.
